Ok...I see. I was looking at the Nagra and Lyric portable recorders as well but they are above my pay grade.
Speaking of which, I used to have the Otari and was lucky enough that I was able to compare the NAB and IEC EQ both on my Otari and Revox. I find that the EIC EQ was tilted towards the middle range frequencies more so than the NAB which was by-the-way was excellent for ensemble music such as jazz and classical. However, when it comes to folk, classic rock, and orchestral music I find that the NAB was more balanced and has a more visceral presence. Of course, it's all about personal preference after all.
Anyway, the tech who calibrated my PR99 MKII was able to balance it between the NAB and IEC EQ during the calibration process of which I thought he did an excellent job as the midrange is more pronounced
than before.
