Home Tape Trail

Reel to reel, cassette and other analogue tape formats.

cassette experiment HK TD292

Just out of curiousity (ok and maybe a bit of decadent nostalgia) bought this on the bay for $120.

Heads look unused, new belts and pinch roller on the way although the existing seem in good shape.

Two heads only, but I won't be doing any recording on it, so should be straightforward for calibration and alignments.

Harmon Kardon cassette players have a very good reputation for sound quality and I can hear why. After about 10 tape auditions, everything from Amadeus to Zappa, have to say, I could live with this!

After living with digital playback for so many of years, it is nice to hear smooth and non-harsh analog even if a bit limited at the frequency extremes.

The TD 292 has EQ/Bias settings for Metal, CR02, and "Low Noise" tape types and variable recording bias.

But I do all my recording now to DSD. It will be interesting to see what the NAK-T100 analyzer tests show for this deck once I can find a quality calibration tape...
