RE: AEG DIN hubs

Let me turn this question around by asking: "Why use reels at all?"

In some sense the reels are like training wheels on your bike. At some point they become unnecessary and even inconvenient.

Reels do get in the way of handling the tape - it is easier without them. And as far as some additional risks - once again, compare that to the risk of falling off your bike: yes, it IS there, but it becomes so small that you don't even think about it.

A couple of points here - DIN hubs require a particular level of technology from your machine - specifically high enough tape tension. With some consumer machines you will never get the pack tight enough for safe handling.

But if you have access to a pro level machines and you know your way around them, then pancakes become natural and easy.

Accidents can and do happen. But in my many years of using the pancakes I only recall a couple, and their extent was minor.

And of course there is that cost consideration. If your tape library has just 200 reels of tape then you have $5-10K in reels alone sitting on your shelf.
