Forget about "archiving" family memories onto tape. Sounds like they're already on tape, and you want to make a copy.
If you want to have a "listening event", that's one thing, but if you want to have a "permanent" archive, that's another.
I recommend copying/digitilating the recordings, and then making a CD.
"Digitilating". That was pretty good. I made that up all by myself.

Edit: I still have 3 new 10" reels of Quantegy 499. I'll sell them for $500 a reel. Yeah, I'm keepin' 'em.
