Home Tape Trail

Reel to reel, cassette and other analogue tape formats.

4 possibilities

None of which are really a big deal.

1) Bad cable. But you probably thought of that.

2) Dirty contacts. Squirt some contact cleaner on the male plug & insert it a few times in the jack. If it still doesn't work, try using a pipe cleaner saturated in contact cleaner. Not the fuzzy craft ones, a real pipe cleaner.

3) Cold solder joint. I've fixed quite a few of these & they're no big deal if your soldering skills are even just ok. As long as you have a steady hand, you should be able to fix it. Use a low temp soldering iron with a fine tip & carefully heat the solder joints on the faulty jack. Your goal is to merely heat the solder that's already there. Don't add any more. When the solder turns to liquid again, you're done. Remove the iron & let it cool without moving the deck. Don't blow on it to cool it or you could get another cold joint. You should only have to apply the iron for a second or so for it to do it's work. Also, be careful not to bridge any of the terminals & make sure your tip is clean before you start.

4) Bad jack. If you can find a replacement, carefully desolder the old one & solder in a new one. Usually not a real tricky repair.

Good luck & hope it's an easy fix!
