Maybe the deck could physically damage the tape somehow, like if there was something damaged or sharp in the tape path. Or possibly if the tape was scraping against the reel flange too much as it played...But this is pretty unlikely.Really the damage from tape transports, in my memory, isn't while playing, its while shuttling the tape or fast-forward/rewinding, or going from rewind into play, etc. If the brakes are out of whack the tape could spill then snap up suddenly, etc. But these are pretty extreme cases--TRY IT with a test tape you don't care about so much.
Which reminds me of a story I read: When Bob Marley and the Wailers were recording the classic "Catch a Fire", the young british engineer thought he was pretty hip smokin' a splif while operating the 24 track , when suddenly hot ash fell off and onto the tape, ruining a 6 inch strip of the master take. He initially panicked, but then managed to find a matching part of the song, dub it, and cut it in. And supposedly no one was ever the wiser.
