Assuming I understand your question correctly, I will try to answer your question. If I misunderstood your question, let me know and I will revise.Problem here is that the color codes for this application are not standardized. You can start by assuming that pin #3 is a shared ground/shield. You can then use a standard multimeter to check the DC resistance from the center pin (tip) of each RCA connector and map out which color corresponds to each pin on the DIN connector. If you have the specs on the R2R you are trying to interface to your preamp, you now know which channel of output from the deck corresponds to which color on the RCA connectors.
If you are not electronically inclined, or do not have the pinouts for the DIN on your deck, here's a quick and dirty method that will work just as well...
1/4 track tapes have the spacing as follows as referenced to a 4 track recorder:
Track 1 = Side A Left Channel
Track 2 = Side B Left Channel
Track 3 = Side A Right Channel
Track 4 = Side B Right Channel
So: Channels 1 and 3 represent the side you are playing, 1 being left, and 3 being right. Channels 2 and 4 represent the other side of the tape, and when the tape is flipped, channels 2 and 4 of the tape show up on 1 and 4.
Mount a tape, and mute the right channel output of the deck. Plug the RCA connectors into an input on your pre, one by one. and then when you get output and it isn't playing backwards, you know you've got channel 1. The backwards-playing channel will be channel 3. Do the same for the others.
Hope all this wasn't too confusing, and most of all I hope it helps...
