Home Tape Trail

Reel to reel, cassette and other analogue tape formats.

It's a crap shoot

You never know for sure with a used deck. I'd get a couple of affordable 3-head decks in excellent condition that are guaranteed to work properly. If it's not expensive to start with, and it does need a little TLC, you'll be able to afford it.

There was a very nice JVC on eBay for around $60 a few days ago. I also like the Onkyo 3-head decks for price-to-performance ratio on the used market. You might even find one at a thrift or something. I've bought lots (like probably 20-30) used tape decks and only gotten maybe 2 clunkers, for what it's worth.

I'm not too fond of most of the new decks. I've found the older ones are usually more reliable & sound better.

Cheers,
Bobbo :-)
