Hi, David:There are many reasons why you are experiencing the problem reported.
You obviously should have someone properly adjust your deck. Otherwise, it would be a good idea to really carefully inspect the condition of the heads and their alignment with respect to the tape pathway. If, for example, the record head is properly in alignment, and the play head is not, an uneven wear pattern across the gaps would result in poor response or inadequate level upon playback.
Get out a reel of tape that you do not need. Take a felt-tip marker (blue is good) and mark across the gap of the heads in a vertical strip. Play the junk reel for the entire length and remove the tape.
Upon inspection, you can then see whether or not the contact of the heads and tape is uniform, as there will be a wear pattern forming, as a result of the passing tape wiping off the marking you made. This is a useful way to see beyond a magnifying glass what is really taking place physically. There is azimuth, zenith and forward/backward tilt on head adjustments, naturally and whenever a deck is bounced around, or even shipped form one location to another, these relationships can change. God forbid that the deck was ever dropped!
The rest is up to the technician to adjust everything properly and MOST IMPORTANTLY, to match your deck to a known brand of tape!
What tape were you experimenting with?
Good luck!
BTW, I have owned several ReVox A-77's but not the B-77's. The logic controls on the "B" version were obviously superior to the former model. Othewise, there are not that many differences in the machines, this according to a friend of mine who had them both and serviced his own decks.
I purchased an old E-36 (not the "G" model) years ago. Despite all of the hype about it, I was NOT impressed with the quality of the individual electronic components inside the machine.
This does not mean that it would not sound phenomenal to you!
Have fun!
