I have been trying to get a working 3-head Nakamichi for an office section for a few weeks. I have purchased two 680zx decks that look to be in excellent condition, but neither works properly. The first does not record and gives off a burning smell whenever it is running. The playback is excellent but the lack of recording ability is a problem. Jeff at ESL told me that the burning smell is usually present when the recording electronics are going out. He advised me to use it as is. The second deck I picked up today seems to have a different problem. When I first push play it sounds great but within 5 seconds the sound collapses and the quality is awful. I can't detect any change in speed but this repeats every time I push play, great for a few seconds then it falls apart. Any ideas on fixing the second deck as I am told the recording electronics are rather expensive and not woth the cost of replacing them on the first deck. Thanks
