Anything with electrolytic caps in the circuit can go south in time. So, if the machine has been sitting around and you put a tape in that worked fine the last time you used the machine but it has issues now, it could be the sensor circuit, the tape, the power supply or a combination.
So, unless you have a way of checking the machine outside of it's built in diagnostics (a repair tech) you'll just be guessing.
I suggest you clean the machine and run it for a while. I might just need a little work out. Try using a variety of tapes. You might have one that has some issues.
