Yeah, speed is a lot better. We balanced the loads a bit and now have a minimum of a full 100 mbps and peak out at a gigibit.
But the main difference is likely going to SSDs which nearly puts the database in memory. It's made a huge difference on search.
I still prefer FreeBSD because it just runs and has everything that I need and I know how to set it up. But then, I don't use any GUI stuff, it's all command line and config file stuff. And I still use it for development and a primary file server for the office.
Alas, we went to Munix for the new server, Mac Mini i7s with Apple's mangled BSD Unix. It's a love hate relationship. The biggest problem is that things that I could do in a minute with a simple change to a config file don't seem to be able to be done at all with Apple's silly plist junk.
Oh well, progress.
