How to protect against Ebay fraud?

I've found an item on Ebay that may be a great deal by the time the auction is over.

But, seller is new (0). Item is listed in British pounds, even though the item location is in the U.S..

And the payment can only be made by Postal Order, cashiers check, or bank to bank wire.

The item will probably go for $2-4K. How can I be protect myself if I try to buy it?
