I received an email with apologies from the old chap today. When he was futzing with speakers, for reasons he no longer remembers he decided to change wire terminals on one speaker. He made a mistake during the procedure which resulted in loss of output from tweeters. New owner discovered the mistake and corrected it.
Maybe I was too quick to judge the character of the person and he actually got some old fashioned class after all.
