Companies have a right to charge handling fees on shipments, and the majority of them do that. Just like you have a right to pass on doing business with them. Granted... they shouldn't have claimed a 5-6 lb ship weight as their excuse, but that's just arguing semantics.
Bear in mind there's more to shipping costs than just paying the shipper... the seller must pay for the box, packing material, tape, not to mention the time spent packing (or the wages paid to an employee to pack).
If the company is small, they may not have a USPS account and cannot just have their letter carrier pick up the product. That's time spent making a special trip to the post office, which can sometimes take the better part of an hour.
Comparing Amazon to an Ebay shop is not a fair comparison IMO. Amazon is a huge company who works out volume discounts with shippers, allowing them to charge little or no shipping on many items. Ebay sellers are often one-man operations who cannot take advantage of such perks.
