I recently purchased a timeshare in Mexico, then cancelled within the 5 day cancellation period. After spending two days being given the runaround, I had finally connected with a staff member of the company who told me to fax my complete info to them and it would be taken care of. (I had already asked repeatedly what I needed to do, if I needed to fill out a form, et cetera.) Today (a month later), I received a call from their lawyer who told me they were not going to let me out of the contract, even though they got the fax within the alloted time period. Why not? To get out of the contract, I needed to send a certified letter. Hmmm. When I told him that his company's rep told me otherwise--and DIDN'T tell me that I needed to send such a letter--he said, "She didn't have to tell you anything." Wow. After about 20 minutes of Mafiaesque hardball, I said, "I'll see you in court" to which he replied, "Go ahead, but you will have to prove that we got your fax and prove that we talked to you. If you lose, you will pay our legal fees and a large fine." I couldn't believe it. I called my credit card company and will call their legal department. I also emailed my local media consumer advocate.Anyone have any suggestions?
