For example, Grado sr325 are 32 Ohm 99.8dB/mW and LCD-x are 20 Ohm 103 dB/1mW and should be used with resistor or transformer interface devices.
On the other hand, many recent headphones, especially the planar types, present much lower sensitivity and/or higher impedance.
For example, Hifiman Susvara are 60 Ohm 83dB/mW, Hifiman HE6se 50 Ohm 83.5dB/mW, and Abyss 1266 Phi TC 47 Ohm 88 dB/mW. These work fine with many speaker amps without resistor networks, as long as one does not do something as careless as pushing "play" with all volume controls at max.
