I can't help you a lot on the tubes since I never listened to them all that much before completely redesigning them using different input and driver tubes. That's to say they sound bad ... they are actually pretty reasonable.
Generally the greatest improvement comes from changing the input tubes and the least from the OP so start with the 12AX7s. The stock 845s sound good and since it's expensive to change them I wouldn't bother ... at least not before making other improvements.
