Yeah I read your post about the EML 45 tubes when you posted. I too have some EML tubes. When I first bought my 300B amps they came with the ultra cheap Chinese 300B tubes. The company I bought them from had been boasting about the performance of the VA mesh plate 300B tubes (non titanium) and how they sounded 95% as good as the TJ full music tubes. Well at the time I bought these amps they had run out of the VA and said VA was no longer producing them. I didnt know much about different manufactures 300B tubes (nor amp builders for that matter) but I knew I wanted good sounding tubes but not the horrendous price tag that usually accompanies them. So after some digging here on the asylum I found others stating that the Shuguang 300B-98C was that very tube and rebranded VA. From pics of both it looked to be true. So I stumbled on the Parts Connexion web site and noticed they sold em, after phoning them and finding they only had a not so closely matched pair left (these 300B amps are mono blocks, no biggie) I snagged the pair. They were great to work with and have a nice selection, my recommendations, I didnt even know of SuperTNT as of then. Well after getting my amp and comparing the ultra cheap Chinese vs the slightly more expensive Chinese 300B 98C tubes (about $140), again a no brainer, the 98C mesh won by a large margin. Which brings me to the EML tubes I bought. I wanted a second pair of 300B tubes as backups (promptly sold the cheap 300Bs), like many of us want. So I figured Id spend a bit more and get a pair of well regarded, more expensive 300B tubes for when my amps broke in. So I found a pair of slightly used EML 300Bs on agon for I think $280. So I snagged em. I did a brief comparison of the two 300B tubes (98C and EML) and didnt really hear much of a difference, however it was very quick. I really just wanted to make sure the EML tubes worked properly aside from a mu test. Those EML tubes certainly are built like a tank! However I too have read all the reliability issues and wonder. Well after it seemed my amps would never quite break in and being exposed to Dons work, there going for a rebuild. And you know my take on the old 45 tubes vs the new. Sorry, it took all of 10 seconds for me to notice who won that one. I highly recommend the TJ tubes. They really sounded nearly twice as powerful in my amp. I couldnt even imagine trying to rock out with the old NU tubes. Right now Im listening to the Black Crows, Southern Harmony album on my wonderful little day off of work here, this is how I like to start a day of vacation :-) Not that all my jazz and blues doesnt get a spin too, but some things are better than coffee.
You know on the note of that Black Crows album. For the longest time it was kind of hard to listen to (hold back the remarks non Crows fans;-). It aways sounded forward and over driven, you know the way most rock CDs sound nowadays. But after getting Dons CD player it can make nearly any album sound great. I know many may view this as a short coming, however I dont feel Im missing any molecule of detail. Infact Ive been hearing little things I never noticed before. The separation of instruments and so on is REALLY there. I just cant figure out how he makes this player sound SOOO good. It really does defy all explanation.
The best
Dave
