Is it absurd to pay millions of dollars for some modern art consisting of three coloured rectangles or something similar? When evaluated objectively (setting aside financial investment issues) the answer is clearly no. However, in the context of the modern art community and their values the answer may well be yes.
To those that have a technical understanding and to those who do not consider cables to be desirable objects in themselves, exotic cables are not worthwhile because they perform the same function as normal cables. However, if an audiophile responds positively to the marketing of exotic cables and responds positively to the possession of objects they consider desirable are the cables worth the price to them? Personally I can see no reason why not or why the value judgements of the informed should be imposed on the ill-informed when it comes to choices about personal possessions.
Of course, I have ducked issues concerning what happens to the community as a whole rather than individuals when disinformation is supported and promoted.
