Rane Note 110 shows the "proper" way to make an unbalanced to balanced adpated cable - it's example 17 in the connections table. This is where the shield is connected at the receiver but not at the driver.
Then, if you look on page 82 of Bill Whitlocks AES article, he shows almost an identical connection diagram - except the shield is not only connected at the (balanced) receiver end but also to "LO" on (unbalanced) driver end!
Great. Now I gotta get out the soldering iron and change half of my adapter cables and get out the ABX tester and... lol
