I have a hierarchy of good traits I seek from a stereo system because I just have personal preferences, like I like brunettes. First comes the midrange harmonic richness, or midrange tone. If that isn't right, I pass. I don't know why this hits me the quickest, but it does. Maybe because so much crappy digital music doesn't get it and I hate it when that happens. Next comes overall timbre of the instruments, sounding realistically portrayed everywhere with the emphasis on the midrange being most "filled in". Then I like good sound separation, to the point I can hear the ambience of the hall and all that detail. Next I like microdynamics, or quick transients, then overall PRaT. Next I like the wide dynamic range macrodynamics, and finally good bass performance, not needing the floors to shake. If there's anything I left out, it must be down the list.
