What would the world be like when all you believe

is based upon wild assed guesses - or when the situation suits, just making $h!t up? I really don't understand your perspective.

We all have the ability to "turn off" recognition of sounds around us when the situtation calls for it. When you're in a crowded room at a cocktail party with multiple discussions going on, you are able to ignore some of those other sounds. Dr. West cannot. He always hears the full spatial context of all those sounds. In that respect, his ability to discern certain important aspects of the listening experience has been enhanced.
