Ideally, in the recording of "Live" albums - a reference signal would preceed the recording with a measured output provided at one or more than one "Listeners" position(s). Then an SLM could be used to recreate that level in the listening room - A high passed pink or white noise signal would be ideal for this purpose. This idea was suggested years ago to aid in not only setting initial playbacl levels but also for SQ and Descrete Quad channel set up - ambisonic recordings also recommend such a setup and it could even be used to set up "loudness" setting if you are lucky enough to have and old McIntosh, yamaha, Accuphase or other late 70's early eights preamp or integrated that offered a continuous variable loudness contour adjustment.
