Forgetting proximity effect (bass boost when the microphone is close to the source) let's say that the microphone and source were in an anechoic chamber. It wouldn't matter if the mic were moved from 1 foot away to 5 feet away (assuming it is unidirectional and on the same line.) It would capture the same sound field only weaker. That would mean that the signal would need correspondingly more gain somewhere along the chain either in the recording or playback but it would be qualitatively the same.
