I understand what you are saying about distance but as far as I can remember there are only a handfull of recording that are set-up at the distance where you would listen. So they hear things you wouldn't at the correct distances and can't hear the hall where you could. So if the recording is corrupted by this what difference does it make??? No matter what it not's correct.You have a form of the distortion built right into the recording chain.
