Imagine that you are someone else who doesn't know what you are talking about and see if it would make sense to them.
The only way to avoid making mistakes is to never say anything at all.
If you realize you have made a mistake, accept that fact graciously. Continuing to fight on when it is obvious to everyone including you that you have lost hopelessly only makes you look worse.
