Technical and scientific discussion of amps, cables and other topics.

For anyone interested in the DBT protocol jj uses

it can be accessed free of charge directly from the ITU. It does, however, require a short registration process where you will be provided a user code and password valid for downloading three reports.

First go here. Then follow the "Three Free Recs" button below. Once you complete the form, the ITU will send an email with your login stuff. You are looking for an ITU-R recommendation with the B(roadcast)S(tandard)1116.1 title.

I find that the protocol raises as many questions as it answers:

1. Who chooses the source material?
2. What are some examples of material used to detect "impairments"?
3. Are the participants really given only four hours to learn the selections?
4. On what is the source played? It is presumably some CD player today. Or is it? The document only mentions the "test tapes"
5. The protocol calls for powered monitors mounted 1.2 meters off the floor (or unspecified headphones) meeting certain criteria. What is an example of one such model used?

etc.

Having learned my lesson well, however, I won't be asking jj for any input. :)
