Until I tasted Cuilleron's 96 I would have agreed with you, in fact the first thing I did when I took over the winery was ban the use of new oak in the viognier.

Even after tasting the Cuilleron I stuck to using old oak only (4 year old Taransaud Troncais MT for preference) and I still prefer viognier without overt oak but I was amazed at what Cuilleron could achieve with new oak.

The fist Viognier I ever tried was a Vernay from 78, I don't think I've yet tasted another that matches my very fond memory of that wine.
