I play a relatively compact kit for a rock drummer with a ride and 1 crash cymbal on one side of the kit and the H.H. and 1 crash cymbal on the other. What I ended up doing was to place one of the mics between the crash and H.H. on my left side pointing down and angled away from the snare. This mic was above the H.H. but below the crash. On the other side of the kit, I place the mic as I described in my 1st post in this thread, below both the crash and the ride and ‘up-side-down’ (or pointing up). The distances of the mics to the cymbals ranged from about 4 inches to about 10 inches, which is much closer than I have had them in previous arrangements. These two mics were sub-mixed to a single track and the band was recorded ‘live’. I had the low end rolled off on the mic and slightly at the board.
I thought the crash cymbals both sounded fine. This arrangement also reduced the lovely off axis snare white noise (for lack of a better description and which was my main goal). The snare is separately close mic’ed with an SM57 to its own track
On the negative side … I wouldn’t go so far as to say the sound emanating from the bottom of the ride cymbal sounded like shit but it definitely sounded tubbier than my previous recordings and the lack of stick definition* was obvious. Mic’ing from the top is definitely the way to go if using a limited number of mics. I think at some point it may be a relevant exercise to try a close, bottom/top mic’ing combination on the ride cymbal (after all, the outside observer would hear some combination of the two).
The drum then cymbal (separately) recording technique sounds interesting but I don’t know if I’m coordinated enough to pull it off but I’ll certainly give it a try.
* For those of you not familiar with drummer lingo … drummers not only evaluate their cymbals for their complex timbre but we also characterize that little wood (sometimes plastic) on metal sound.
