Thank you everybody for your replies. The receiver and the next box in line (VCR) are both two-prong AC powered. I can't lift these grounds, assumed tied into the neutral.
I think I am going to get a new receiver as a first measure. At $99 for a new TiVO unit, that would seem to be the safest bet.
I found the Equi=tech site interesting. The balanced mains power idea seems like a good bandaid for crummy power supply design. It makes me want to rip all my equipment apart and redesign the individual power supplies to use balanced power internally. That would also solve the common mode power supply hum problem where it SHOULD be addressed.
Thank you for the Furman power supply conditioner suggestion. I will probably check that out as my next step.
