I really like music but don't like much of the new stuff. I think a lot of that is in the recording. I bought some CDs recently and extracted some tracks to make a CD of "best of" my stuff. I couldn't believe how it looked. Like someone finished the mastering then clicked on the volume button and cranked it up another 6-9db. Most of the music recorded in the last 5-10 years really sounds stifled to me whereas the older music sounds nice and open. I did a little looking and I am not alone in this hypothesis ( http://www.euphonicmasters.com/orban_article.php ). Is it because digital is so good and easy at manipulating? I would guess you could do this with analog too. It's probably the person mastering it. I have to keep looking for older music to listen to I guess. I doubt this will ever change. Hell, lots of people don't mind listening to really poor quality MP3 crap. Just midrange junk swishing all over the place.
