I'm guessing if they were manufactured in the early 80's... I wouldn't be surprised if they were using 748 or 1458 opamps.

That being the case, I would upgrade them to TLO-71's or LF351's
Obviously the best determination is how well it will reproduce square wave after rechipping. If it reproduces square wave with no distortion then sine wave should be very clean through the audio path.

We've upgraded hundreds of old TASCAM mixers and machines through the late 80's and there is quite a sonic difference.
