though it can be done. The first thing to do is identify what you have for op amps already, then investigate whether newer/higher grade chips make sense. The best way to swap out is to use a soldering iron with a chip removal head to pull the old ones and replace them with high quality sockets, which then allows a simple plug in replacement of chips.

A good source of information on replacing older chips is "Op Amp Applications" by Walt Jung. This also covers cleaning up power supplies and a myriad of other subjects that you really should know about before attempting any Poogeing.
