Hi! Been lurking for several months.I am considering building my own tube mike preamp based upon the schematic in the very first Glass audio, which consists of a Jensen transformer feeding a mu-stage 12AX7, and then into half a second 12AX& as a cathode follower. Each channel of the preamp will feed directly into the inputs of a Roland VS-880EX hard disk recorder via 4-6 ft interconnects home constructed either of Belden 89207 (per Jon Risch), or Belden 1696 (AES/EBU transmission cable). Right now, I am using a Mackie 1604 to provie phantom power, and taking a direct out of the channel to the Roland.
Question 1: Any comments on whether this would result in a significant improvement in audio quality (assuming that I build the preamp correctly with top-notch parts)?
Question 2: I have seen line-level preamp topologies that either parallel two sides of a 12AX7 in the cathode follower stage, or (as in the Eric Barbour line preamp in Glass Audio) a mu-stage with a 6BL7 or 6BX7. since I am not driving long lines from the preamp to the Roland HDR, I don't think I need to use either of these approaches. any comments?
