6 grand to start on a friends studio - help please

hi there, my name is keegan and im from brisbane australia, i am a 20yr old audiophile and build alot of my own diy hifi equipment

recently a good friend got success and advanced a few levels on austrialian idol(tv show), he has just come accross 6 grand and knowing my hifi expertise has intrusted me to build a home studio for him and seeming i trust audio asylum i was wondering if u guys could help me out

our fav music is pink floyd (he is a big dave gilmour fan owning alot of the guitars) and depeche mode

im assuming my hifi training in minimalist design and the "keep it simple stupid philosophy" should steer me in the right direction so i initially i am thinking of buying a decent shure mic and a couple of other austraian made copies of it.

thinking of making my own cables for pretty much everything

feeding them to something like a presonus 8ch mic preamp and analogue to digital converter and pluging that into a new computer

i have no idea on what sound card to get but am thinking it shouldnt be too critical if i am using the presonus as the adc

i will be running a unix based operating system and taking advantage of the great new open source programs comming out such as ardour multi track recording and jeskolla buzz for synth and effects and electronica (my expertise)

i am thinking of using some high end grado headphones for the monitoring and if speaker monitoring is needed ill just use my hifi that way we can save some money

and when it comes to mastering i am going to use a yamaha cdrw-f1 burner and my favourite black audio cd's to record

he has a spare room and am thinking it shouldnt be too hard to get a decent recording environment out if using hifi traits such as room lenses, dampening, bass trapps etc

this is just a few ideas i have going and would appreciate any suggestions

thank you in advance - regards keegan
