DIY "Scratch DJ" Monitors

My son has taken up the indoor sport of "Bedroom DJ" and purchased a turntable, CD player and mixer. The mixer is currently connected to his stereo. I'm concerned that live scratching may be too harsh for normal audio loudspeakers and am considering making him some small monitors. I would appreciate input regarding either problems using home audio loudspeaker and/or recommendations for building small PA monitors. Specifically what types of tweeters are suitable. His current speakers have soft (silk) dome tweeters.
