We built a number of racks years ago and they held up pretty well over the 6 year life of the band. Use good plywood to start with. We butt jointed all the panels and added strips of oak to screw into. Glued and screwed, added prefab rack rail cut to size, small metal corners, and casters. I made a template for the handle cutouts that really made that part easy. We had planned to make covers out of carpeted 1/4" plywood that would velcro/friction fit, but never even got around to that. They all lined up in truck end to end so there was never any need for covers.

I did build a new main amp rack years later (when we finally bought some new amps) that was much deeper. I had no rack rail left so I used some big pieces of oak and hefty wood screws to secure the amps. They never moved an inch. We might have just been lucky though.
