You don't need a stereo mix but you do need a mixer. Folded bass horns like W-bins have evolved from cinema systems etc. from 80 years ago. They have 2 properties which make them useful for large PA's:1] If you stack 3-4 per side the mid bass efficiency is high
2] The drivers are less likely to get rained on outdoors, or have beer cans pushed through them.PA seems to be as fashion conscious as the rest of the music industry so I don't know if horns are "in" this year..but horn PA does not scale down to small venues.
33 years ago bands like Deep Purple, Led Zep did small venues with 4 x 12 columns. In a small venue you are miking the vocals, bass drum, keyboards/bass guitar first. A wedge monitor for the vocalist would be good and some sort of mixer.
Personally I would use a modern 4x10 + constant directivity treble horn in a column [about 300w per side mono feed] for vocals only, and send the bass instruments through a seperate system [maybe 2 x 15 per side; or 2x18 + 2x bright 10"s...just a guess. Add a constant - directivity treble horn if it's keyboards too] at about 1kw.
Truly deep bass would need a coupled cavity bass bin - copy a design from the web or a manufacturer - but Rock bands don't need them so much. Maybe useful if you have 5 string bass though.
