To be honest, if you're trying to 'warm-up' something like the sound coming out of computer D/A outputs, I don't think that EQ is the answer. The real Pultecs had three transformers in the circuit; input, output & inter-stage. The Tube-tech 'copies' (for example) have input & output transformers only. The interstage transformer in the original includes an additional winding that seems to form part of a 'feedback' circuit. -It's this that helps define the Pultec's behavior at high signal levels. -Don't expect the same behavior from the Tube-Tech or the Langevin, the Langevin is solid state, so the design requirements for transformers go right out the window...
About the only thing that might offer significant sonic massaging without seriously messing up the spectral content the way that injudicious use of an Equalizer will, would be something like the Crane Song distortion simulator, or the (kinda similar basic idea) Empirical Labs FATSO (which stands for something like "Full Analog Tape Simulator...") But I think that these are outside your budget.
I think that if nothing in your budget fits the bill, don't just go and buy something elst just because is in your budget. -It's better to save a grand than waste a grand! -See if you can try things out, never buy anything just because someone else says so... (not even me... in fact especially not me!!!) -Remember, if *you* can't hear the difference, you don't want to use it. -the next pair of ears to hear it might hear something bad that you didn't notice, -then you'll have done nothing but harm, as far as that pair of ears hears it!
..Me? -I'd play with a few things, but if I'm not knocked out with anything... I'd pocket the grand(!)
