"Are these any good compare to todays' monitors."

They weren't any good compared to yesterday's monitors.
JBLs are designed for high intelligibility at high levels; i.e. to be heard from a great distance.

A midrange prominence, a loose and undifferentiated bass and no top octave of some of its worst offenses. JBLs sound like the music is trapped in the boxes.

While they'll never play as loudly, a $150/pair of Monsoon MM-1000s sound much more like real music. If you go for a dollar for dollar match, the JBLs will be left in the dust. (E.g. a pair of $550 Magnepan MMGs won't play as loudly either but WILL tell you the truth about what you're doing; the JBLs just don't have the ability to do this.)
