I think Yamaha totally lucked out with the NS-4 and NS-10. The 10 was worse than the 4 so I don't think it was really about Yamaha's expertise at all.

The thing that amazes me is that people seem to think high resolution small speakers can replace the NS-10 when the whole point was that they were equivalent to a wire-frame viewfinder on a camera, i.e. a means of viewing the big picture of the musical balance rapidly. The solution ten years ago was having both high resolution AND "reference" monitoring availabe for comparison. This hasn't changed.
