Re: Building PA Speakers

65.4.229.198

Many thanks for the URL, Roland--I'll certainly look through that site and its ring. I have several other sites to investigate from my looking through these Pro Audio Asylum postings as well.

Perhaps you or one of the other knowledgable people here can help me with a basic concept. Are PA loudspeaker enclosures designed differently from home speaker enclosures because they 1. operate at higher sound volumes and 2. the listeners are much further from the speakers? I'm referring to the calculations of optimum volume and tuning the resonant frequency based on Thiele-Small parameters. I know from experience that PA loudspeakers develop their sound several feet in front of the drivers. Is that a function of the box design, or simply of the large diameter of the bass drivers?

My application is for relatively small gigs, sometimes outdoors, sometimes at the zoo where they don't want the music to disturb the animals. They don't need to shake the ribs, just provide clarity to all the listeners. I only do vocals and acoustic instruments for now.
