I second the Edirol R-1. I got one to replace my worn out portable Sony MD rec. I mostly record off the board but the bulit in mics actually sound pretty good. It records MP-3 and wav. formats w/ adjustable bitrate and has a neat little "mastering" setting (as well as some other effects) that can clean - up or enhance the sound. They are usable during recording or playback but unfortunatlely only one at a time.
