I better qualify my position from the outset. I hate the DAT format.
It is like a miniature VCR with spinning head and all. It is subject to all the unpleasant nasties you encounter with video tape. Unless for some reason you want DAT as the format, and I cannot for the life of me imagine why, investigate the other types of machines now becoming available for location work. Get the catalogs of Full Compass Systems, Sweetwater Sound, B & K, and any others you can think of and peruse. Marantz has the PMD670 Pro Digi Recorder using a 10GB microdrive and/or flashcards. SONY still makes the PCM-M1 portable DAT if you must. Sound Devices makes a nifty two track field recorder, 722. Prices for this range of goodies goes from a little under a grand to over $2650. and we have only scratched the surface. I don't sell any of this stuff or have a stake in what you buy. If you do purchase it is often convenient to have a relationship with your dealer in case of problems irregardless of warranties. May you and your photog buddy find the machine he needs. Happy hunting.
