I'm looking for a 2 channel mike preamp, preferably tubed, to do some large scale (orcestral/band) recordings. I'll be doing it for free, so the budget is a bit limited, but I'd be willing to go up to $1K. I don't mind tinkering with the interior guts, so I'd prefer to avoid any unit with surface mount devices, as my half century old eyes can't really work with such miniature beasts.
In searching the web, no one mentions the interior construction, so I have some difficulty in assessing the build. I'm assuming that most of the miniscule and cheaper models will all have surface mount devices by their sheer size.
Sooo... does anyone have a recommendation for a decent platform that can be tweaked out? Will I have to do one from scratch?
I've played around with a DBX 486 and did a few modifications to it which improved performnce quite nicely, but since half the circuit seems to be surface mount it is difficult to achieve the performance I would like on a budget.
I'd really appreciate the expertise and knowledge any one out there could offer.
Stu
