Re: Christmas present - inexpensive mixer for my kid -- Help!

Buy the Yamaha 10/2 mixer for $99. The mic pres are great and the overall sound is excellent for the money. I think that Alesis has just added USB out to some of their mixers as well. They are very affordable. I just finished a solo piano recording project on a Steinway B for a client and everyone who has heard the master is just shocked at the sound for $99. I also used a tube mic pre and the sound very similar. I used an Echo Indigo I/O card into my Dell laptop with Sound Forge Audio Studio 7.0. If you know how and where to position mics it can be magical. It is amazing how good recording today can be on the cheap.
