Annual church conference. Approzimately 300 people, six mics. Old Shure Powermaster 705 powered mixer plus Peavy RQ300 mixer. Unit had never given any trouble, but it had never been cleaned or serviced. We had a local shop check it out and had just gotten it back.
Setup was going well. While the speakers were being erected I hooked up the cassette deck to aux/effx. Plugged in mic. No signal whatsoever. Aux was dead, Oh well, have to record off of monitor.
All the mics were hooked up and speakers were ready to plug in. As soon as connection was made BBBBBBUIUUUUZZZZZZZZZ. Also could fsintly hear our voices over the system, even though no mics were up. Disconnected mics, still same problem, Removed everthing except headphones from mixer, still problem. First prayer meeting is in 30 minutes. My friend and I make a fast run back to my house 20 minutes away to get a Mackie 1202, A 400B powered mixer, and a Samson Servo 120 amplifier. I spend the entire drive figuring how to hook these up. we get home and I rush to grab all this stuff. Takes a little while, besause I looking for a specific cable. Finally everythng is loaded into the car and we are headed back to the school.
We arrive just as the meeting is ending, They had one mic hooked up for announcements. As I sit down behind the sound table, I brushed against the Telex handheld wireless mic. The receiver was not connected. The buzz changed, I moved it further away from the mixer and buzz lessened again. I checked the mic and it was on. I turned off the mic and the buzz disappeared. No need for the other equipment at all.
We took the Shure back to the shop and he told us that the Graphic eq had a thermal and that the aux was nonreparable. Telex said that the wireless handheld had a broken wire. The two of them were connecting. We sold the Shure on Ebay and have used a Mckie 1604VLZ ever since.
