Pro Tools Free will only get you 8 I/O. Pro Tools LE will get you up to 32 tracks, but you can only use it with the Digi 002/001/002R/Comand8 hardware.
Nuendo comes in both Mac/Win platforms. I'd wait for Nuendo 3 which should be out by the end of the month.
With a laptop you are pretty limited with Firewire only, which is not a bad thing. Someone mentioned that Lynx is only PCI. Well sometime in January, Lynx will be shipping the Aurora 8 and 16. I have the LynxTWO cards in a PC and their customer support is awesome.
Most of the PC studios are going to Nuendo (mine included). Samplitude/Sequoia is PC only and is pretty awesome too.
