There are differences in the sound of software, not just the hardware. Check out the DAW Sum Sampler CD you can purchase. For a Mac, the multi-track choices are slim and mostly expensive, and usually don't get the nod for quality. I use Spark for mastering, but it is 2-channel only and discontinued, but sounds great. I have not been able to settle on a Mac multi-track software option yet. Waves is possible, but there are still questions. I am convinced I don't want to get locked into the ProTools world, however, even though others like the ProTools HQ track on the DAW Sum Sampler. I agree that most software is ProTools compatible in some way. Will ProTools Free work for you?
Samplitude or Sequoia are for PC only. I'm considering building a PC just to do multi-track because of the software available for PC. Sonar and Vegas are also PC only.
RME, the Lynx 2 series and the E-mu 1212m get the best user/listener comments overall for sound in soundcards/interfaces. For a laptop interface, check out the RME Fireface 800. I would go for it before the MOTU. I use the RME DigiPAD now and customer support is truly great. MOTU has not always had as stellar a customer support reputation. Lynx and E-mu have only PCI card solutions.
I hope these quick comments are of help.
Ben
